Ohio Dominican University Begins NCAA Division II Exploratory Membership

NCAA Division II membership committee has accepted a Central Ohio Higher Education Institution’s application for exploratory membership in the National Collegiate Athletic Association

Columbus, OH (PRWEB) September 3, 2008 — Ohio Dominican University’s membership application for the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), Division II has been approved for exploratory membership effective this 2008-2009 school year.

“We are honored to officially begin the membership process with the NCAA and will be diligent in our planning efforts over the next three years to reach our ultimate goal of full membership,” said Dr. Brian Nedwek, Ohio Dominican University President. “I commend the work of our athletic department staff and student development division for bringing the university to this point.”

The NCAA Division II prescribed timeline for membership is three years. The first two years are spent in exploratory membership, followed by one year of provisional membership. Ohio Dominican University is currently a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA).

“Last school year, our athletic teams excelled greatly in their respective conferences,” said Jamie Caridi, Vice President of Student Development. “Twelve teams played in the regional finals; six teams played in the nationals; and five of our coaches received honors and recognitions for their leadership. We want to continue to excel and offer quality programs to our current and future student-athletes.”

If accepted, Ohio Dominican University will be the only university in Central Ohio to be NCAA DII, joining three other Ohio schools that are currently members of the DII’s highly-competitive Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletics Conference (GLIAC). They include Ashland University, the University of Findlay, and Tiffin University.

Over the last few years, Ohio Dominican University has taken several steps to meet NCAA Division II requirements, including the following:

• Expanding its athletic programs, currently offering 14 intercollegiate sports, including men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, volleyball, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s cross country, football, and men’s and women’s soccer.

• Developing a plan for providing athletically-related financial aid in a manner that is consistent with NCAA principles and at a level that will be competitive.

• Expanding sports facilities, including a new multisport stadium and stadium lighting, and additional practice fields, weight rooms and athletic offices. This summer, the university will expand its baseball and softball facilities.

• Breaking ground for a new 82,000-square-foot student center, to open in the fall of 2009, which will include new locker facilities and an athletic office complex. The student center will augment and improve the university’s existing intercollegiate athletic facilities.
